John A. Andrew
O large of heart, and grand, and calm,
Who held the helm of state so long,
Our plaining mingles with our praise,
Our sorrow sanctifies our song.
Clear eyes, kind lips so silent now,
Ears deaf to all our worldly din,
Great soul which has not left its peer,
We would the grave-sod had shut in
Some lesser man, and we, to-day,
Had thy strong will to urge us on,
Thy brain to plan, thy hand to help,
Thy cheerful voice to say "well done!"
But whatsoe'er we do of good,
In doing it we honor thee;
We follow where our leader led,—
Can he look down from Heaven and see?
